Paris in the 19th century

Past the troubled period of the French Revolution and the end of the monarchy, main historical events took place in Paris and the city regained its status as the Capital of France.
By the end of the Napoleonian wars and with the return of the Bourbons to the throne, Paris demographic took off again.
With almost 1 million inbitants by the middle of the century, thus with a still very midieval city structure, Paris is therefore overpopulated and unsanitary and became the prey to epidemics.

Under the second empire and with the influence of Napoléon III, larger construction works will take Paris to the era of modernity .
The city will is enhanced with new infrastructures, global urbanism is totally re-thought in order to improve the life standards of the people.
The construction of the drinking water networks from the Bois de Boulogne and Vincennes to the small parks aired out each district of the city; the Baron Haussman who initiated these constructions became household name for Paris Modernity.

The end of the Empire and the beginning of the Republic were proof that the city was entering into the 20th century: the city celebrates sciences and modernity during the 1889 world fair. Some monuments, among them the Eiffel Tower Paris, temporarily build for the actual World Fair, will become the symbol of Paris. Paris became at the beginning of the century the world capital for arts and culture.
