The Austerlitz Station is one of the ends of the line railways station in Paris, located near the Seine.
The station of Austerlitz was originally the end of the line station in Paris for the network of the Company Paris-Orléans.
A first pier was built in the current place of the station and put in service on September 20th, 1840 on the occasion of the opening of the line Paris-Juvisy, prolonged to Orléans in 1843. A first increase took place in 1846. The station was enlarged, even reconstructed, from 1862 till 1870. This vast space was used as workshop of hot-air balloons during the siege of Paris in 1870.
In 1900, the Company of Paris-Orléans (PÔ) prolonged its line towards the center of Paris and the Orsay Station became the new end of the line.
In 1910, during the big floods of the Seine, the station was flooded and the traffic totally interrupted from January 31st till February 9th.
The Austerlitz Station remained for a long time the main head of the lines of the connections towards the Southwest of France, but the starting in 1990 of the Atlantic TGV, served by the Montparnasse Station, considerably weakened its activity main lines.
Its traffic is no more than about 25 million travelers a year, which is half of the Montparnasse Station one. It is also a subterranean station of the RER C.
