Library – Museum of the Opera

Since its creation on June the 28th, 1669, until the middle of the XIXth century, the Royal Academy of Music (at the origin of the Opera of Paris) successively occupied different rooms but that no institution was officially in charge of assuring a continuity in the management of archives and in the preservation of the divers documents produced by the activity of the Academy and the theater which depended on it.
Law officially creates the Library and the Archives of the Opera on May the 16th, 1866. The new Opera is inaugurated in 1875 and a rotunda stocked with woodwork welcomes the first readers.
The Library presents among its collections paintings, costumes and decoration drawings, more than 60 000 objects.
