During the reign of Louis XIII, the royal law of 1635 creates the Royal Garden of medicinal plants, one of the firmest scientific institutions in France. The bursar and the holders of the main responsibilities are all doctors of medicine. In the XVIIIth century, the activity is transformed: we cross spend from art to be cured with plants to natural history. The royal statement of March 31st, 1718 separates the responsibility of first doctor of king from the superintendence of the Garden. Then comes the reign of Georges Louis Leclerc, comte de Buffon (1707-1788), appointed in 1739 and who conducts during 50 years what is called the King’s Garden. His international notoriety and his important work make this place one of scientific spot of the XVIIIth century. The Museum has today a national and international major role in the development of Natural history.
The National Museum of Natural History, which historic heart is located in the Jardin des Plantes, counts 14 places in Paris, suburbs and regions.
