The Revolution created a specific Archives Administration in order to answer to new needs: Parliament Archives conservation, grouping of the capital of the Ancient Regime Administrations, sales of the national possessions. The decree of September 7th, 1790 creates the national Archives but the fundamental text is the law of Messidor 7th the year II (June 25th, 1794). This law has the merit of a triple creation: • National Archives centralization • the establishment of their advertisement in opposition with the previous practice of the official secret • the creation of a national archival network.
Pierre Daunou, “general guard of archives” appointed by Napoleon Ier, finalized the first frame of classification which had to adapt itself to the evolutions of the administration and the documentary supports. Proposed collections: archives of France since the Merovingian until 1958. Archives of organisms and offices of the Ancient Regime which were suppressed during the Revolution, archives of National Central Administrations, private archives, Parisian notaries documents…
