Before he decided to transform his house so that she can become the current museum, Gustave Moreau intended to preserve in a "small museum", the rooms of the first floor. In April 1895, Moreau decides to make build « rue de la Rochefoucauld » the big workshops to present his oeuvres to the public. He sacrifices his workshop, as the second floor of the house, in order to obtain the maximum place on the ground he owns. He preserves the apartment of the first floor and the corresponding rooms of the first floor. Vast and glazed workshops replace the second and the third floors. The furniture and the recollections were then arranged in the remaining rooms. It is no more the apartment such as Gustave Moreau and his parents occupied it; it is a real organization symbolically orchestrated by the artist around his recollections. The Association of the Friends of the Museum Gustave Moreau, the CGIP and the Friends of French Art contributed to the restoration in the identical of the apartment of the painter. On the occasion of the centenary of the museum, the Association of the friends of the museum also participated in the restoration of the cabinet of reception opened to the public since June, 2003.
